Dream League: Pre-Pro

Purpose: To inform the public (Bay area) about the organization Dream League. It is a non-profit organization that brings together students to unite a community and promote healthy learning. They do this by organizing professional basketball games for students to play in.
Contacts: Dream League founders, some players (can decide while at a game), some organizers
Interview Questions:
  • What is your name?
For Founder/organizers:
  • What motivated you to create this organization?
  • What is the goal of the organization?
  • How do you think this organization has helped the lives of the students? of the community?
  • What is your favorite part of the organization? What do you like to see?
For players:
  • How does this organization help you (academically, communally)?
  • How often do you participate in Dream League?
  • What do you plan to get by participating?
  • What do you think that the goal of this organization is? Do you think it works?
Shot List- Quick shots for games, Close up/medium shots/extremem close ups for interviews, maybe some profile shots for interviews. Shots of what goes on "behind the scenes" - maybe on the phone, on clipboards, players playing the game/warming up. close ups of basketball going into basket
General Flow: There will be two sections of the documentary. The first section will be quick to emulate the pace of basketball games. It will be aimed at being the most intense to grab audience's attention. This will be achieved through quick cuts, jump cuts. The second section will be the effects of the organization. How it affects students. What it aims to achieve. This will be much slower to maybe trigger an emotional response from the audience to make it 'hit hard'.
Production Schedule:
  • December 5 - pre-pro done (contacts, scheduling, shot decisions)
  • December 10 - shooting finished
  • December 13 - editing done
  • December 14 - documentary done and ready to screen.

  1. Great topic. I also love the sport/basketball theme that goes along with the documentary. This allows you to utilize some fast shot pacing and give that intense action feel. For your interviews you could also try something interesting too, like what Bigue did when interviewing the Cap football players. I'm also impressed that you've already established a production schedule. Your 2-piece flow of the documentary would be very effective, but think about the transition between the two pieces, and how you'll go from fast paced action shots into the second section with information about the intent of the organization. Managing to get that key transition would make the documentary flow so well.

  2. From looking at your post, it seems as if your focus in on the gameplay. The basketball games is an important part for your segment, on the other hand, your interview questions make up for that. For B-Roll, it should be some b-roll on the players lives too. Not just game play. Otherwise I would feel as if i’m watching a highlight reel. Although you focus a lot on the present for this segment, it would be nice to do some research such as articles from previous people that were on the dream team. You might find some articles and news stories that relate to your subject too. Don’t just go into the interview with questions you came up on the spot. If you do the research, you can get some solid interviews. The cinematography that you are suggesting in this documentary makes it seem like a sports broadcast. All action like yet, I feel the purpose of your documentary goes away if you make it action like. Perhaps you should take a step back and maybe tone down the atmosphere of the documentary. You are shooting for action and quick but it would be better to minimize this aspect.

  3. I really like the non-profit/sports topic. Aiming at the mental gain for the participators this organization provides would also be essential in developing this documentaries narrative. I think your shot list within your pre-production seems pretty solid. Looking over all the shots would be an excellent source of B-roll to help add to the documentary’s look. By doing so, audience members will be more interested in the depths of the organizations rather than staring at a bunch of interviews. Your two section break down for the documentary will help the flow of the documentary with fast paced cuts and some interesting action shots to give the film a more upbeat mood. Good job and ball so hard.
